Monitoring Wash Water from Ship Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems

Chelsea Technologies is the leading manufacturer of monitoring wash water for both new build and retrofit ships. Our systems are now installed on numerous vessels worldwide. Ship exhaust gas emissions from diesel engines release harmful gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere.

The IMO has established new regulations to reduce emissions - in 2020 the global limit for sulphur will drop to 0.5%. One method of meeting these regulations is to clean emissions before release using an exhaust gas cleaning system. One of the challenges associated with wet scrubbing is handling the wash water discharge. The Chelsea Sea Sentry Wash Water Monitor continually measures both the inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems to ensure compliance.

Chelsea’s green shipping solutions set the gold standard in delivering monitoring solutions to help owners, operators and regulators ensure that stringent national and IMO compliance standards for wash water from exhaust gas scrubbers and for ballast water discharge are met, as well as PAH+ and turbidity sensors that can be ordered individually and retrofitted into other manufacturor's cabinets

Chelsea solutions

Chelsea Technologies has direct experience of compliance and the high standards demanded by regulators. Chelsea’s Sea Sentry scrubber wash water monitoring system has the capability to accurately measure the required parameters of water in both open loop and closed loop scrubbers. Sea Sentry provides a fully autonomous monitoring system which analyses both the water inlet and outlet of wet exhaust gas scrubber systems.

Sea Sentry analyses wash water to ensure that it is compliant with environmental regulations which reduce potentially high levels of contamination in exhaust gas scrubber wash water discharge. Chelsea works closely with shipowners, leading global scrubber manufacturers and the Exhaust Gas Cleaning System Association to provide operators with the expertise they need to operate with the highest level of confidence in their system and in proving compliance under the IMO criteria.  Sea Sentry is certified by DNV-GL and ClassNK and is the gold standard solution which measures the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), absorbance, turbidity (to ISO 7027: 1999), temperature and pH of wash water.
