Green Shipping Solutions for the Maritime Industry: Applications

Applications: Compliance Monitoring of exhaust gas scrubber wash water & treated ballast water

Compliance Monitoring of Exhaust Gas Scrubber Wash Water & Treated Ballast Water

With the continual increase in global shipping trade, the International Maritime Organisation have introduced an increasing number of regulations in order to reduce the impacts that we are having on the environment.

In 2005, the MEPC introduced regulations for the prevention of air pollution under Annex VI of the Marpol Convention. Under these new rules, ships operating both globally and in Emission Control Areas must reduce NOx, SOx and particulate emissions. One of the most common methods of doing this is to use wash water in a wet scrubber system, which must be monitored at all times. Using Chelsea’s specifically designed sensor technology, our Sea Sentry System monitors both the inlet and outlet water from wet exhaust gas scrubber systems.

2017 is likely looking to be the year that the International Maritime Organisation’s 2004 Ballast Water Management Convention will be ratified.  These regulations stipulate that all ships will be required to manage their ballast water operations and treat their ballast water before discharge or use another acceptable method such as ballast water exchange offshore. Treated ballast water will need to be monitored by Port State Control, Ship owners and Treatment System Manufacturers to ensure that treatment is working to the D2 Standards outlined in the Convention. FastBallast Compliance Monitor is the only technology on the market that can confidently and accurately measure the standards outlined for phytoplankton cells, which is the only parameter currently used for rapid compliance testing.

Stephanie will specialise in developing CTG’s Maritime business areas – promoting such products as the FastBallast Compliance Monitor, the Sea Sentry Wash Water Monitor for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems and the maritime FerryBox System.

CTG Sea Sentry Exhaust Gas Scrubber Water Monitoring System has achieved DNV GL Statement of Compliance

Chelsea Technologies Group (CTG) are pleased to announce that their Sea Sentry Exhaust Gas Scrubber Water Monitoring System has achieved DNV GL Statement of Compliance for MEPC.259(68). Vigilant testing by DNV GL ensured that Sea Sentry met the requirements for calibration range, drift, accuracy, precision and noise; as well as mitigating for the influence of turbidity, UV absorbance, temperature and salinity. The effectiveness of Sea Sentry’s de-bubbler and the use of the test kit supplied to validate the optical sensors was also demonstrated to the satisfaction of DNV GL. Read more...
